GenZ Frontier Defense Desk | June 18, 2026

Army Chief General Waker-uz-Zaman emphasized the critical role of a modern, efficient, and patriotic army in safeguarding the independence and sovereignty of the nation. He noted that the primary responsibility for leading this esteemed institution rests on the shoulders of its officers.

The Army Chief delivered these remarks during the President's Parade held to commemorate the commissioning of the 90th Long-Course Officer Cadets of the Bangladesh Military Academy (BMA) on Thursday. He inspected the spectacular parade at the BMA Parade Ground in Bhatiari, Chittagong, received the formal salute, and presented awards to distinguished cadets.

A Legacy of Global Contribution

General Waker-uz-Zaman reflected on the history of the BMA, mentioning that it was founded in 1974 with the core objective of developing dedicated, efficient, intelligent, and talented army officers suited for the challenges of the 21st century.

“Under the guidance of officers commissioned from this esteemed academy, the Bangladesh Army, driven by loyalty, discipline, fairness, and a strong sense of duty, is currently making significant contributions beyond the nation's borders.”

He added that the Bangladesh Army, committed to the motto "Chiro Unnata Momo Shir" (Ever High is My Head), continues to enhance its capabilities through the visionary planning and effective training provided by the academy.

Modernization and the 2nd Bangladesh Battalion

In light of the rapidly evolving global security landscape, the Army Chief highlighted various practical development initiatives implemented to modernize the armed forces.

As a major milestone in this effort, General Waker-uz-Zaman officially inaugurated the "2nd Bangladesh Battalion" at BMA. This new battalion has been established alongside the "1st Bangladesh Battalion" to: * Enhance the overall quality of cadet training. * Ensure access to modern, state-of-the-art facilities. * Cultivate skilled, agile, and competent leadership to address future military challenges.

The 90th BMA Long-Course Graduates

Addressing the graduating class, the Army Chief emphasized that by taking the solemn oath, the newly commissioned officers have been entrusted with the supreme duty of defending the nation's independence and sovereignty.

Following three years of intensive and rigorous military training, 184 officer cadets were officially commissioned into the Bangladesh Army. * National Cadets: 166 Male and 18 Female officers. * International Cadets: 4 from Palestine, 1 from Tanzania, 1 from Zambia, and 1 from the Maldives completed their military training and will be returning to serve in the armed forces of their respective nations.

Outstanding Achievements and Awards

During the ceremony, exceptional cadets were recognized for their remarkable performance: * Battalion Senior Under Officer Khairul Islam: Awarded the highly coveted ‘Sword of Honor’ for being the best all-around cadet, as well as the ‘Chief of Army Staff Gold Medal’ for outstanding performance in military affairs. * Sergeant Abu Bakar (Tanzania): Received the ‘BMA Trophy of Excellence’ as the top foreign cadet trained at the academy.

At the commencement of the event, the Army Chief was greeted by the Acting General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Army Training and Doctrine Command, the Commandant of the BMA, and the GOC and Area Commander of the Chattogram Area.

The grand parade was attended by Members of Parliament, high-ranking military and civilian officials from domestic and international backgrounds, invited dignitaries, media personnel, and the proud parents and guardians who later presented the rank badges to the new officers.
