A Tribute to Jahangir Kaka: The Man Behind the Screen
Legacy & Heritage Desk | GenZ Frontier | June 28, 2026
To the world, he was Dino Shafiq, the immensely talented actor who brought smiles to millions across the globe. To fans of the classic, beloved British TV series Mind Your Language, he was the unforgettable and endearing Pakistani gentleman, Ali Nadim. But to me and our family, he was simply Gulam Mohiuddin—a beloved son, a cherished brother, and my dear uncle, Jahangir kaka.
This is a personal tribute to remember him not just for the iconic characters he played on television, but for the extraordinary man he truly was behind the screen.
Family Roots and Heritage
In those days, our family did not use a western-style surname system. We were bound not by a shared last name, but by deep, unbreakable family ties. Jahangir kaka was a loving son to my grandparents, Hasena Banu and Gulam Merajuddin.
He grew up surrounded by a large, bustling, and close-knit family. He was a brother to three brothers and four sisters:
- His Brothers: My father, the late Muhammad Salahuddin (his elder brother), the late Moinuddin Ahmed, and Erfanuddin Ahmed.
- His Sisters: The late Sufia Khatoon, the late Fatema Banu, the late Khaleda Banu, and his youngest sister, the late Abeda Banu.
Though Jahangir kaka never married and had no children of his own, his legacy was carried on through the vivid stories shared by his siblings. I came to know the many vibrant chapters of his life mainly through my parents, who were closer in age to him and shared a wealth of precious memories from their youth.
The Vibrant Youth and "Mr. East Pakistan"
From everything I have come to understand, Jahangir kaka was a restless, energetic young man with a spirit that wanted to conquer the world. He was handsome, highly driven, and possessed a deep passion for sports, music, and physical fitness.
Alongside his academic education, he dedicated himself rigorously to bodybuilding—a relatively niche but demanding discipline at the time. My father used to keep books and magazines featuring photographs of Jahangir kaka's bodybuilding poses, showcasing just how exceptionally good he was at it. His unwavering dedication to the sport led to a defining moment in his early life.
In the late 1950s, his ambition pushed him to leave Dhaka, East Pakistan, to participate in a major national bodybuilding competition in Pakistan, most likely held in Karachi. It was there, on that grand stage, that his hard work paid off brilliantly, and he proudly won the prestigious title of "Mr. East Pakistan."

The Journey to Global Stardom
That same vibrant energy, physical discipline, and love for the arts eventually took him far beyond the borders of his homeland. When he moved to the United Kingdom, he carried his charismatic persona with him. Transitioning into acting, he adopted the stage name Dino Shafiq. He became one of the pioneering South Asian actors on British television, breaking barriers and representing a familiar warmth that resonated with both diaspora communities and international audiences.
A Connection Beyond Time
When I watch his movies or TV shows today, I do not just see an actor on a screen delivering lines. I see his eyes, his nose, and the unique, animated way he talks. Those familiar expressions instantly remind me of the stories my parents and grandmother shared around the family table.
Watching him gives me a profound sense of connection—a connection of blood, family heritage, and enduring love. He may have belonged to the world as Dino Shafiq, bringing laughter to millions, but in our hearts, he will always be our restless, vibrant, and deeply loved Jahangir kaka.
